REQUEST TO WITHDRAW "THE FRAME OF THE DEAD" FROM THE TEHRAN FILM FESTIVAL
Dear organizers of the Iranian Film Festival:
I have heard that my film "The frame of the dead" has been selected to be screened at your festival and I must say that what appeared to be a good news for me, really filled me with sadness.
A part of my movie, and I suppose this has been assessed by the jury, is about how important it is to keep within us the values and memories of our beloved ones. My mother, who is the protagonist of the film and died four years ago due to cancer, always talked me about justice and tolerance and respect for all people and cultures. And I think that her values remain in me and I hope that one day I can teach them to my children.
I am telling you this because, over time, I have dedicated a part of my work and my efforts to fight against injustices in the world and I would betray myself or my family's teachings if one day I won't do that.
For this reason, I think is a fair decision to withdraw my film "The frame of the dead" from the competitive section of the festival and I request you not make any screening of it in your country.
I find it particularly outrageous that Iran's regime, tortures and prevents the work to my fellow filmmakers and, at the same time, organizes a film festival, ironically called "Cinema Verite" and in which Iranian filmmakers have no right to participate, even they don't have the right to make movies, which I know is as if I'd lost the right to see, to feel, to talk and, of course, the right to express freely.
I imagine that you, the organizers of this festival, have heard about Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Katayoon Shahabi, Mohammad Nourizad, Maziar Bahari, Bahman Ghobadi, Mohammad Rasoulof and Jafar Panahi, among many others who have been arrested and tortured by the fact of making movies. And I could be one more name in this list if I were born in your country, because for me there is no greater freedom than being able to express in images and no greater torture than losing that right.
For all this, I beg you to disappear any relation of my film and my name with your festival. I would love that the people of Iran, some day, may enjoy it, but in any case, my name may be accomplice to regime that discriminates, tortures and makes disappear people with different ideas. Someday "The frame of the dead", I am sure, will be screened in Tehran, but this will happen at a festival in which Iranian filmmakers can project their films in freedom and without fear of repression and torture.
Sincerely,
Samuel Sebastian
