ABOUT THIS DOCUMENTARY
Migration is a multifaceted reality that needs to be seen from many
points of view. Thus, with CEAR - PV we made La mar que ens separa,
videocreation about migration and mass media (broadcast by TVE Catalunya
and nominated last year) and The endless way, a feature film about
the early days in Europe of 15 migrants from Africa, finalist this
year.
The time of preparation of Migrant Women coincided with the
completion alongside Fernando Herrera Inaraja of God is white,
which deals with migrants who are stranded in the Sahara desert by
the Moroccan and Mauritanian authorities, sometimes in collusion with
the Spanish authorities. I thought this documentary reflected very
well the plight of many of these people, but the view was exclusively
male, so I thought that a female viewpoint was more than urgent. I
met Adriana Gomes who was doing a thesis on this subject just and she
was very important in structuring the issues we were interested in:
the motivations of migrant women, their current situation, their point
of view about gender violence in their countries and in Spain. The
idea was a mosaic, as migrant women find four continents, but unfortunately,
not all of them dared to speak. Fear is one of the factors of migration
never takes into account and is one of the most frightening: many migrants
and in particular women, have fled their country in fear, make their
migratory journey with fear and when they get to their host country,
their fears are multiplying.
My idea from the beginning was to give all the attention to migrant
women, so throughout the film there is only close-ups to them and nothing
else. Although the set is so simple (the migrant women in front of
a white wall with some cracks that resemble the borders of the countries),
the visual treatment was really complex, which in my opinion seems
fundamental in causing a dramatic effect and I think that is largely
neglected in social documentaries.

ABOUT
THE AWARD
It is very important to find this documentary, made in a terrace and
with no budget, competing against documentaries that have cost about
50,000 €. I think that the jury had rated the honesty of the work very
unusual, the situation of migrant women.
On the other hand we must also take into account that the economic
crisis has greatly affected the audiovisual media, for that reason
precisely those who are used to make movies with many ideas and no
budget, have been a great boon, since the crisis really has not affected
to the way we work, on the contrary, unfortunately we find many more
realities to explain.

SOCIAL DOCUMENTARIES
I admire the work of some NGOs involved in migration and, despite receiving
strong political pressure or suffering outrageous economic cuts, they
continue with the same commitment to social reality. As a filmmaker,
one of my concerns is to reflect the society around me. For that reason,
I can not leave out facts like this. When working with organizations
like CEAR, I think all I can do is to reflect the admirable work of
many people like them.
